2021 Marta K. Stone Excellence in Leadership Award to be Presented to Joan Billman, CFSP

Mentor, friend, advocate, and supporter are just a few of the words that can be used to describe the 2021 Marta K. Stone Excellence in Leadership Award Recipient, Joan Billman, CFSP.

Joan has been a part of the LEADERShip Ashtabula family since participating in and graduating from the Adult class of 1997. From that time forward, Joan has participated in many committees; served as Education Day Chair a number of years; and is currently serving her second round as a member of the Board of Directors. She served as Board President for the 2009-2010 year.


Joan, along with her husband Bob and partner Tom Fleming is a funeral Director and owned and operated Fleming & Billman Funeral Homes in Ashtabula, Geneva and Jefferson. She also helped form and direct a 5 member funeral service cooperative, The Family Care Group, that operated in Ashtabula from 1997 until 2020.


Joan has held many leadership roles on a local, regional and statewide level, including serving as the President of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association President in 2014-2015. She currently serves as a Trustee on the Funeral Service Foundation Board, which serves as the charitable arm of the National Funeral Directors Association.

Within Ashtabula county, she worked diligently to have the consolidation of Ashtabula and Harbor schools become a reality. Joan also has held board positions with many varied organizations including ACCESS, Gilda’s Club, and Big Brothers-Big Sisters. Joan also has held office positions with her church, Ashtabula United Methodist; and her property allotment. Joan and her husband Bob will be celebrating 40 years of marriage in October. Bob is also a graduate of the 1998 Adult LEADERship class, and their two now adult sons, Chris and Nick graduated from the Youth program when they were Juniors. They have 4 grandchildren, and are looking forward to spending lots of time with them!
